In Britain and Ireland it is a tradition that women can propose to their partners only on a leap-year day which is the 29th February. It’s said to only be allowed on the 29th because it’s considered to be good luck.
The whole tradition behind a women being able to propose to her partner on the 29th February is said to have come from St. Brigid of Kildare, a fifth-century Irish nun who asked St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, to grant permission for women to propose marriage after hearing complaints from single women whose men were too shy to propose. In which he gave permission for women to propose every seven years but from brigids insistence allowed women to propose every leap year. The folk tale is that brigid then proposed to Patrick in which he refused, kissing her on the cheek and offering a silk gown to soften the blow, which is said to be why the Irish tradition therefore claims that any man refusing a woman’s leap-day proposal must give her a silk gown. Similar to some European countries, in which their tradition states that any man who refuses to a marriage proposal from a woman on February 29th must then buy her 12 pairs of gloves, the intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. It’s also said to be from the 12th century that again began in Ireland where women were allowed to propose marriage as they believed this balanced the traditional roles of men and women. Regardless of how the tradition started women can take control and propose, only one day of the year, every 4 years. So how many women would actually propose to their boyfriends? I decided to do some research and I think a lot of people would be surprised at how many women would propose to their boyfriends, how many actually have and In fact, how many men would say yes if they were asked by their lady. For them it’s so the whole stressful to some proposal isn’t all down to them. So why do women wait for that one day to propose to their lover? Majority of the stories I read through, the women had been with their boyfriends for years, and felt it was time for them to take control, and pop the question themselves, due to not wanting to wait around for their over halves. But other women decided they were going to propose to their partners simply to show them how much they love them.
