We may not be able to rely on the sunshine to rain down on us this summer but at least we can pretend we’re in the tropics with the latest wedding trend: The Pineapple.

Nothing says “summers here” quite like the bold, bright presence of a pineapple. Now, you either love them or hate them because if there is one thing that the Pineapple is not, that’s subtle.

This funky, little motif is popping up everywhere; from bright, bold prints in the fashion world to tropical art work and decorative pieces in people’s homes.

And as this summers hottest trend, it’s coming to a wedding near you. So whether you’re getting married at home or in some tropical paradise, here are some of our favourite ways to include Pineapples in your wedding…

Pineapple Vase

I know that you won’t believe this but pineapples make brilliant vases. All you need to do is cut off the head of the pineapple and carve out the core. Once you’ve done that you can fill with a beautiful bouquet of brightly-coloured flowers. And an added bonus is you can use the scooped out pineapple to serve to your guests too.

Pineapple Sangria

If you’re making the vase above and want to make something different from the pineapple then how about whipping up a batch of Pineapple Sangria?

3 cups pineapple juice

1 bottle dry white wine

1 cup brandy

1 ripe pineapple cut into 1-inch chunks

It could be used as a welcome drink for your guests at the evening reception or placed in a big server for guests to help themselves.

Pineapple Themed Invites

Just because the pineapple is bright and vibrant, it doesn’t mean that your invitations have to be garish. These classy invites from Etsy keep it classy whilst including the pineapple theme.

Have your cake and eat it

Your cake is the perfect place to make a statement – both visually and taste.

Top your table

Dressing your tables is one of the best parts of designing your wedding. The table decoration can take it from bland and uninspired to romantic and memorable. Once you decide on a theme, in this case, tropical, then think of the colours associated with the theme. For example, yellows, greens and golds work well. Think about having different tropical themes for your tables too, so you could have pineapple, cocktail, flamingo – it’s a bit of fun and it’ll help you bring the whole design together.

So, we are most definitely fascinated, why the Pineapple? Well, let’s start by saying that this fruit is so wonderful and so perfect that the name actually means You Are Perfection in the language of flowers.

It’s also a symbol of  hospitality and has a long and charming historical past. In colonial times, sailors would bring pineapples back from their adventures and display them outside their home as a way to invite their friends and neighbours over. If you head to certain parts of America and the Caribbean, you’ll see pineapple shaped door knockers continuing to extend hospitality to visitors old and new.

The trend continued to flourish and pineapples soon started to be used by the wealthy to serve to guests. As it’s popularity grew, so did the price and as it transformed in to the must have dessert whenever it was consumed it was seen as a great indulgence.

And its reputation continues to thrive, whilst we maybe used to seeing it’s  idiosyncratic shape and vivid colours pop up in shops everywhere and its sweet smell and taste is a firm favourite, there is no denying that just the whiff of a pineapple adds instant warmth and sunshine to any occasion.
