About the Museum of the Order of St John:

Glowing gold and crimson in winter, overflowing with scented flowers in summer, St John’s Gate and its Cloister Garden are perfect venues in which to celebrate the British seasons.

The historic rooms are simultaneously grand and intimate, providing an ideal location for receptions, dinners, lunches, lectures, concerts, conferences and meetings.

At Christmas, the Chapter Hall blazes with colour and its enormous chandelier sparkles brightly. In the spring, the Cloister Garden bursts into flower and, by midsummer, its shady benches are surrounded by swathes of lavender, roses, thyme, sage and lilies.

The Museum of the Order of St John is licensed for marriages to take place in the Chapter Hall and Council Chamber. Built in 1504 and with interiors designed by John Oldrid Scott, both spaces are breathtaking. They are decorated with paintings dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, exquisite stained glass and antique furniture.

Private tours of the historic rooms, Priory Church and Crypt may form a part of any event at St John’s Gate.

Venue hire: Weddings and Civil Partnerships

A beautiful historic setting for weddings and civil partnership ceremonies

The Chapter Hall

The Chapter Hall with its grand fireplace, vivid stained glass windows, chandelier from the Farnese Palace in Rome and collection of paintings from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, is an impressive yet welcoming ceremonial space for up to 100 guests.

The Council Chamber

The Council Chamber is a more intimate room, spanning the arch of St John’s Gate; it seats up to 30 people (25 for weddings), and accommodates 50 people standing. With exquisite Whitefriars’ Glass windows, large paintings of British monarchs and gold commemorative panelling, it has a very special ambience.

Special rates are available for couples wishing to hold their receptions at St John’s Gate.
